Chapter Thirteen
Entering Quantinium’s atmosphere was always a risky proposition and it made Cerise sick to her stomach. The constantly raging ice storms created extremely hazardous conditions and ships had to maneuver using basic controls in order to remain inconspicuous to any sensors that might be monitoring the area. She hid out in their cabin, lying in bed under the dulling influence of a light tranq. She trusted both Tie and Regan to get her down safely—Tie because it was his ship and he knew how to fly it and Regan because he’d done it so many times before. Part of her wanted to be on the bridge to watch them work together. Hell, she wanted to watch them do anything and everything together, but there were only two seats on the bridge and that meant she’d be standing since she was useless when it came to flying in extreme conditions.
She weathered the bumps and stomach churning, unpredictable air currents relatively unscathed thanks to the wonders of a little Rom. Used sparingly, the black market drug could be useful. Go just one little step over the line and you were an addict, a Romhead. Short-term memory loss, lack of focus, extreme weight loss, constant thirst and sometimes hallucinations were all symptoms of Rom addiction. Cerise had seen it too often among the disenfranchised poor of the galaxy who had no hope, no reason not to become a drug addict to escape the futility of their existence in the Amalgamation. Fortunately Regan knew how to administer it properly in order to help her with her anxiety attacks. Tie hadn’t liked it, but when Regan had reassured him he’d finally relented, probably because Cerise was already so wound up at just the thought of flying into Quantinium she’d been a trembling, hyperventilating mess. They had to rely on Rom because it was easier to get on the black market than the safer, regulated drugs.
She’d actually fallen asleep by the time they entered the bay at the rebel base. The base was located under an energy dome. Quantinium’s extreme cold was lethal to any unprotected creature outside the dome. Along with the raging ice storms and extreme cold the moon’s surface was sheer ice a kilometer or more deep. The dome brought the cold up underneath it to a livable temperature, but not warm enough to appear as anything more than a scientific anomaly on sensors, were any to scan the area. It was not enough to warrant a visit from an Amalgamation science team. With an energy dome it was possible to deactivate the dome and evacuate the area within a matter of hours. Portability was an important selling point in rebel equipment.
The moon was covered with one endless jagged shard of mountain range. The base was inside one of the thousands of peaks on the moon. The mountain had been blasted out into a warren of small rooms, interconnected like a maze, all paths eventually leading to the large bay housing the small fleet of rebel ships stationed there.
